Why would anyone put mercury in dental fillings or use amalgam fillings when we know how poisonous mercury is?

Just steve's avatar

Yes Wilma, why would anyone protect the use of mercury or all of what may be up to thousands of additives not allowed in other countries to be used here?

Mercury is a major poison for people and the environment. It is necessary to combat mercury, and Consumers for Dental Choice and Dr. Mercola are taking commendable action.

50% of the composition of the metallic amalgam used in these types of dental fillings is mercury: the most toxic non-radioactive metal known. Dental amalgam can contain silver, copper, and tin, and exposure to excessive doses of these metals can be harmful. The health effects depend on the metal involved and include skin irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More specifically:

Silver is widely used in industry and for medicinal purposes, and it is present in our food. In very high concentrations, it can cause local irritation and silver deposits in tissues, but no other harmful effects are known.

Copper is an essential micronutrient. Copper deficiencies can, for example, cause anemia, but exposure to excessive levels can also cause anemia and damage to the liver, kidneys, and immune system. Tin dust and fumes can cause lung problems, and if ingested, inorganic tin can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Excessive doses of tin can affect how the body processes other metals such as copper, zinc, and iron.

The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology has demonstrated that mercury from dental amalgams evaporates at an alarming rate. The risk increases with hot foods, citrus fruits, acidic products, fluoride in toothpaste, bruxism (teeth grinding), tobacco use, drug use, creating electrical currents with other metals (bridges, gold fillings, orthodontic appliances, etc.), and with the electromagnetism of cell phones, electric razors, or toothbrushes, among other things.

Mercury poisoning, also known as hydrargyrism or mercurialism, has been clearly linked to a slow decline in health in certain cases. According to various studies, metallic amalgam fillings increase the risk of:

1) Chronic fatigue

2) Alzheimer's disease

3) Sleep disturbances, nightmares

4) Hypoglycemia

5) Muscle fatigue

6) Digestive disorders

7) Memory loss

8) Lack of energy, motivation, and concentration

9) Psychological symptoms (mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression)

10) Difficulty making decisions

11) Psychological disorders

12) Susceptibility to infections and long-term, difficult-to-treat illnesses.

13) Central Nervous System Disorders: Vertigo, Migraines, Dysphasia, Tremor, Memory Dysfunction, Reduced Vision, Visual Disorders, Tinnitus, Severe Headaches, Rheumatic and Joint Pain, Reduced Mobility

Dermatological Disorders: Eczema, Acne, Neurodermatitis, Cradle Cap, Dry Skin

14) Digestive Disorders: Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, Food Allergies, Gastric Ulcers, Colopathies, Candidiasis

15) Endocrine System Disorders: Diabetes, Thyroid Dysfunction, Genital and Urinary Disorders, Gynecological Problems, Infertility, Malformations

16) Intraoral Disorders: Metallic Taste, Electric Shock in the Oral Cavity, Stomatitis, Mucosal Pigmentation 17)

Mercury-Safe Amalgam Removal Procedures may include:

1) Placing a rubber dam to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth

2) Putting the patient on pure oxygen to ensure clean air intake

3) Using a high tech air purifier to suck in the mercury vapor for proper disposal

4) Operating a vacuum system at maximum efficiency

5) Applying copious amounts of water to the filling during removal

6) Removing the amalgam in large segments to minimize the generation of mercury vapor and amalgam particulate

7) Providing the patient and dental staff with a mercury-free source of air

8) Protecting the environment with approved mercury recycling equipment

Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that contaminates the environment and enters the food chain. Research has found that if ingested or inhaled, it can damage the nervous, renal, and cardiovascular systems.

We must consider that when it enters our brain, it is converted into its metallic form, and its average elimination period is approximately 27.4 years. Forty percent of the lakes and rivers in the European Union contain more mercury than is considered 'safe'. The European Commission is now seeking a solution to this problem. Mercury can persist in the environment for an average of 3,000 years and travel great distances during that time.

Mercury emitted into the air eventually settles in water or soil, where it can be leached into the water. Once deposited, certain microorganisms can convert it into methylmercury, a highly toxic form that accumulates in fish, shellfish, and animals that eat fish. Besides dental amalgams, most human exposure to mercury is due to the consumption of fish and shellfish contaminated with methylmercury, both in the United States and worldwide. It is estimated that more than 75,000 newborns in the United States each year may be at increased risk of learning disabilities associated with prenatal exposure to methylmercury.

Have you written any articles on the subject of Scoliosis in young children. I have a 7 year old niece that has been diagnosed with early scoliosis. She has had 2 scans and the second does show minor progression. Is this hormone related? Any recommendation of supplements or therapy? Thank you. I am a paid subscriber.

Dear Susan.I am not a doctor, but I have posted many comments on Dr. Mercola's official website. I haven't seen any reports on early scoliosis in Dr. Mercola's newsletters.

Early scoliosis is the best time to intervene, as the bones are still malleable and respond well to neuromuscular correction.

For conventional medical treatment, consult your doctor. You should also consult them about this information I have found.

1. The Hormonal Connection

There is a documented relationship between certain hormones and spinal development during the pubertal growth spurt:

• Melatonin: Its role has been extensively researched. Some studies suggest that low levels or dysfunction in melatonin receptors could affect the symmetry of vertebral growth.

• Leptin: This hormone, related to body fat and satiety, also influences bone maturation. Altered leptin levels have been observed in adolescents with scoliosis.

• Leptin: This hormone, related to body fat and satiety, also influences bone maturation. Altered leptin levels have been observed in adolescents with scoliosis. • Growth Hormone (GH) and Estrogens: Both dictate the speed and closure of the growth plates. An imbalance in the timing of these hormones can make the spine more vulnerable to deformities during rapid growth.

2. Science-Based Supplementation

Before starting any supplement, it is vital to consult with a pediatrician or orthopedist, but the following nutrients are often key for structural health:

• Vitamins D3 and K2: These are essential for bone mineralization. Many young people with scoliosis have insufficient levels of Vitamin D, which weakens the mechanical resistance of the vertebrae.

• Magnesium: This helps regulate muscle tone. Overly tight or asymmetrical paravertebral muscles can worsen the curve.

• Collagen and Silicon: Organic silicon promotes collagen synthesis in the connective tissue and ligaments that support the spine.

3. Natural and Physical Therapies

More than "magic supplements," the key to early-stage scoliosis is neuromuscular re-education:

• Schroth Method: This is the physical therapy with the strongest evidence base. It consists of specific exercises designed to "derotate" and straighten the spine through breathing and asymmetrical muscle activation.

• Informed Osteopathy: Can help release tension in the fascia that may be pulling the spine to one side.

• Swimming (with nuances): Although traditionally recommended, it is now known that recreational swimming does not correct scoliosis on its own. It is better to opt for exercises that promote body alignment and postural control.

Practical suggestions

1. Complete blood work: Check levels of Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium.

2. Podiatric evaluation: Sometimes a leg length discrepancy (one leg shorter than the other) or poor gait accentuates the curve of the spine.

3. Posture and backpack weight: Although they do not cause scoliosis, they can aggravate discomfort and its progression. Recommendations to discuss with your doctor

Based on the links and medical literature, these would be the logical steps:

1. Blood Tests: Request levels of 25-OH Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, and, if possible, a basic hormone profile (estrogen/melatonin).

2. Sleep Hygiene: Ensure total darkness and regular sleep schedules to optimize natural melatonin production.

3. Evaluation by a Specialized Physiotherapist: Look for someone specifically certified in the Schroth Method or BSPTS.

" [M]ercury fillings have declined sharply in many private dental offices, yet they remain common in public programs such as Medicaid, prisons, military systems and tribal health services. This toxic exposure is no longer evenly distributed; it concentrates among children, pregnant women, low-income families, and institutionalized populations who can't easily refuse treatment."

Huh, those who can not easily refuse treatment - (some not even able to get treatment at all...setting the stage for infections, inflammation's, fertile ground for all kinds of Dis-Ease.) Huh, you know - those people, the poor, those with low income jobs, hit with one too many "body slams in the School of Hard Knocks." Many of those who situation was created by the DAVOS Crowd, yet called the Poverty Problem called unnecessary, useless eaters and breeders. Depopulation?

Then too those who serve in the Military are given the toxic Mercury in the years they serve and the health damage presents later in life? What gives?

Mercury unsafe at any level but used in so many "health procedures for decades." (And Mercury is just one of many.) And, Mercury like most of the others doesn't just sit in one place, but through our life activities can pass through our life functions to affect in other places and share the negatives with others just the same. Just because someone maybe fortunate to be able to have proper treatment does not mean you are safe. Similar can be said about some med's.

Offenders that make it hard to survive, near impossible to Thrive. (Or as Doc has shared elsewhere; "survival without healing."

Also consider it has been long known, all of a century, proper clean diets produce extremely healthy teeth with few to no dental caries. It is the Western Diet and especially the Ultra-Processed Foods that cause the Gum Dis-Ease's that in turn cause the cavities.
