Interesting. Having seen reports from multiple sources how glass held products had more plastic residue and was left wondering how this could be. This explains it is the lids, the covers and the way they are designed causing the residue. Plastic bottle caps on so many things, plastic in the lids of so so many products. Seems impossible to avoid plastic contaminations.
Dr. Mercola's presentation on supplement packaging seems particularly insightful to me because it focuses on something we practically never ask ourselves: what's really under the lid and what comes into contact with what we ingest daily?
When we buy a supplement, we usually look at the ingredients, the dosage, and the brand. However, we rarely think about the inner lining of the lid, the seals, adhesives, coatings, or the amount of oxygen and moisture the product might be exposed to during months of storage.
And here's a fundamental point: a supplement's value doesn't end with its formula; how that formula is preserved until the moment of consumption also matters.
Dr. Mercola also points out something especially important for sensitive products: every time we open a container, we introduce fresh air, and certain ingredients can gradually deteriorate due to oxidation. That's why he suggests using high-barrier systems, such as aluminum containers, along with nitrogen, oxygen absorbers, and desiccants when appropriate.
It's not about falling into the simplistic trap of "good glass, bad plastic." The real question is much more interesting: what materials protect the product, what substances can migrate from the packaging, and how is the ingredient's stability maintained throughout its shelf life?
I think this is a much-needed wake-up call. The industry should provide much more information about the packaging, not just about what the supplement contains.
The quality of a supplement shouldn't be measured solely by what's on the label, but also by what we don't see: what protects, preserves, and is in contact with the product.
