This review reports that GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, modulating synaptic transmission, promoting neuronal development and relaxation, and preventing insomnia, depression, and neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, several properties of GABA have also been reported in non-neuronal peripheral tissues and organs, including antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiallergic, hepatoprotective, renoprotective, and intestinal protective effects. Sprouted rice and fermented foods contain a significant amount of GABA.

The physiological balance between excitation and inhibition in the brain is significantly affected in Alzheimer's disease (AD). GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmission system in the mammalian brain. Dysregulation of glutamate and GABA

has been demonstrated in multiple brain conditions.

As reported by Dr. Mercola, GABA deficiency is associated with anxiety, fear, depression, phobias, impulsivity, addictions, schizophrenia, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, tinnitus, chronic pain, migraines, allergies, and muscle tension.

Factors that can impair the efficient conversion of glutamate to GABA include a lack of cofactors (vitamin B6 and magnesium) and a deficiency of the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase, which converts glutamate to GABA. Infections and chronic stress inhibit the function of this enzyme. GABA and the vagus nerve collaborate to control how the gut microbiota affects brain function. The vagus nerve is also an important regulator of the immune response and appears to be crucial for gut-brain-microbiota communication.

Exercise at approximately 85% of your maximum heart rate, to be exact. Welcomed information to combat Depression. Depression extremely hard for so many to avoid due to sea of offenders and stressors to live through on a daily basis. Also welcomed information to move us away from another layer of meds given to prevent something and do little to no such thing. Possibly a piece of the puzzle regular people have noticed but experts have been denying explaining a possible link fueling negative social behaviors.
