It's shocking that progestins continue to be available and prescribed. I've also found that a great deal of the scientific literature out there on this topic confounds terminology, making no distinction between bioidentical progesterone and the synthetic versions, thus leading to tremendous confusion about the safety profile of progesterone. In fact, I just read a big study coming out of Europe that concluded that bioidentical hormones, including progesterone, aren't neuroprotective. I couldn't believe that conclusion so I read the full study. Virtually all participants were taking progestin, not progesterone. Pretty sure the sample size of progesterone takers was far too small to draw a valid conclusion but the headline is that bioidentical is same as synthetic for neuroprotection, offering little and in fact causing harm. And that's what most people will, unfortunately, walk away with.
